What are Sleep Issues / Insomnia?
Insomnia is a condition where an individual struggles to fall and stay asleep, seriously affecting health and day to day life. Sleep issues can cause individuals to feel tired all the time, impacting our mood and affecting areas of our lives such as relationships and work. Types of sleep issues include:
Insomnia
Insomnia is a sleep disorder that causes an individual to struggle to fall and stay asleep, or can prevent individuals from having restorative sleep. These issues can result in cognitive impairment and prevent people from taking part in normal day to day activities.
Sleep Apnoea
Sleep apnoea is a disorder which causes an individual to stop breathing intermittently during sleep and can cause loud snoring. This can often result in fatigue or exhaustion.
Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless leg syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes an individual to move their legs when trying to get to sleep. This can cause uncomfortable feelings and can severely disrupt sleep, causing fatigue during the day.
Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder which causes extreme tiredness during the day and can cause an individual to fall asleep suddenly at any time. This can hugely disrupt an individual’s normal sleep.
Circadian Rhythm Disorders
Circadian rhythm disorders are conditions that disrupt your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. These disruptions affect how well you sleep when you sleep and how you function while awake. They’re also known as “circadian rhythm sleep disorders” or “circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders.”
The Circadian rhythm involves multiple components and processes in systems throughout your body. Most people’s circadian rhythms are automatic, and their bodies follow them without any problems. But if you have a circadian rhythm disorder, that process may not work as it should.
Circadian rhythm disorders can happen because of degenerative brain disease, head injury, damage to optic nerves or retinas; some people have Circadian rhythm disorders that experts have not been able to explain. The effect of these disorders varies between individuals, however, can cause major impact on quality of life.
Symptoms may vary depending on the particular disorder, examples include:
- Trouble falling asleep (insomnia).
- Difficulty staying asleep.
- Trouble falling back asleep during the middle of the night or early in the morning.
- Waking up earlier than you want or plan.
- Trouble walking up (sleep inertia) or unpredictable sleep-wake times.
- Sleepiness during the day, which can lead to hypersomnia.
- Needing to nap during the daytime.
- Fatigue.
- Headaches.
- Depression, irritability and other issues due to lack of sleep.
Parasomnia & Narcolepsy
Parasomnia is a group of sleep conditions related to the REM stage of sleep that can cause an individual to display unusual behaviours during sleep, such as talking, walking, eating, having night terrors or sleep paralysis, among others.
When should an individual seek medical help?
Seeking medical help for sleep issues or insomnia is essential for managing these types of conditions effectively and improving your quality of life. Here are some situations in which you should consider seeking medical assistance:
